In this episode of Zen Compass With Julio Rivera, our host speaks to author and mindful leadership expert Pandit Dasa, who is on a mission to bring wellness to the American workplace. Pandit has spoken at numerous conventions and summits and conduced corporate mindful workshops. He’s spent 15 years living in NYC as a monk and in his book, Urban Monk, Pandit talks about what inspires him. Pandit is also one of Zen Compass’ Meditation Teachers.

WHY PANDIT BECAME A MONK IN NYC INSTEAD OF INDIA
The primary reason was a practical one - Pandit’s Indian visa had expired. But after six months in Mumbai, Pandit was ready to be back stateside, closer to his parents who lived in New Jersey. Pandit had a few monks in NYC who he had befriended previously, and joining them in monkhood in the Lower East Side meant he’d be with people he’d already knew, as well as be under thirty minutes away from his parents.
WHY USING MANTRAS IN YOUR MEDITATION CAN BE HELPFUL
Mantras, repetitions of certain sacred sound vibrations (usually from the Sanskrit language) can that help calm and soothe the mind. This is especially important for our senses which often get overwhelmed in big cities. To understand why mantras can be soothing, think of it in terms of sounds. Mantras are essentially soothing sounds. When we’re not feeling our best, we often reach for calming music to help us feel better. This is because sound has the ability to relax us, as music and sounds can move our emotion. Reversely, playing heavy metal music may give us the opposite result. Mantras are sacred sounds that have the ability to soothe us and connect better with ourselves and using it in meditation can help us stay calm.
WHAT PANDIT THINKS OF MEDITATION IN THE AGE OF TECHNOLOGY
Pandit thinks that meditation is going to be needed much more now that technology is such an integral part of our lives. Even with 15 years of monkhood under his belt, Pandit admits to being addicted to his phone – having to check it every time it notifies him. Pandit believes that the more we are addicted to technology, the bigger the need to focus our minds through meditation. This disconnection from our gadgets and technology is extremely useful because our brain can only handle a finite amount of information before it becomes very distracted. So in order to keep energizing and focusing our mind, we need to meditate more.
